However, occasionally, we come across something far rarer and more desirable out of the Casas Grandes pueblos. Up for auction is one such piece, a beautiful and extremely rare example of Prehistoric Playas Red Incised olla dating to ca. 900 AD (CE). Mata Ortiz ceramics are considered to be among the finest in existence, and even contemporary examples of Mata Ortiz pottery are among the most sought-after examples of indigenous pottery in the world. But the revival of Mata Ortiz ceramics has only been ongoing for the past 30 years. This incredible example of prehistoric Casas Grandes pottery is historically significant in that it represents an early pre-classic antecedent of the curvilinear designs that make both classic Medio Period Casas Grandes polychrome and contemporary Mata Ortiz pottery so easily recognizable.This is a truly unique and stunning piece, far rarer than the contemporary Mata Ortiz ceramics which themselves are becoming more difficult to find, and would make a very fine addition to any private or curatorial collection of Native American antique or Pre-Columbian pottery. At 6 3/4 inches (17.1 cm) in diameter and 5 7/8 inches (14.9 cm) in height, this stunning piece will display very nicely. Aside from one superficial, minor rim chip it is complete and unbroken, without any restoration or repair! And aside from some very slight surface chipping and the aforementioend rim chip, it is in perfect condition.
