Description
Here is something really rare and unusual and unlike anything we’ve ever seen before; a miniature pewter tankard, all handmade and decorated all around its upper rim and handle with an extraordinary selection of letters and symbols. What do they all mean? Why are they there? We don’t know, but it’s all part of the charm of this truly quirky and unique item. The base is perfectly round and the handle is large and nicely shaped, but the upper rim has an extremely unconventional appearance and is what makes this such an endearingly odd piece! All around its uniquely shaped rim is a jumble of scattered letters in a variety of type fonts, all arranged higgledy-piggledy and in with no apparent pattern in mind. On one side there is the symbol of a cross underneath the letters, may be a religious emblem or maybe just another random symbol. The handle has been stamped with two sets of letters, one on top of the other. The lower set appears to be DEGFLITR and then stamped over them, upside down and in a different font, are what appear to be the letters MAATIE. The top of the handle has been stamped with what might be an R, a / mark and the number 2. The significance, if any, of these letters as known only to the person who made this truly one of a kind object! The underside of the base has been stamped with an E inside a triangle. It measures 1 ½” in diameter at the base, approx. 2 ¾” at its widest point and stands approx. 2 ¾” tall.
