This tall 8" (20cm) terracotta figurine is from the Greek Hellenistic period (c. 200 B.C.), which was the apex of Greek power following the conquest of the Persian Empire by Alexander the Great. The beautifully rendered female figure is wearing the traditional himation cloak with the chiton garment underneath, and displays remnants of yellow slip pigmentation. The piece has been restored, but without loss of original material (crack repairs only). Additionally, the figurine has an old collection label under the wood plinth stating that it is "Tanagra", but while from the same period and with the same general form, it lacks the exquisite detail (and commensurate price!) found in true Tanagra pieces.
