Description
"Colonial Williamsburg" Pewter Salt and Spoon by Stieff Lovely Pewter Open Salt and Spoon reproductions from the Colonial Williamsburg collection. The open salt has a gently rounded body and curved base. It is copied from the original in the Governor's Palace kitchen. The simple pointed spoon is an adapted from an antique English coffee spoon. Both have a highly polished mirror finish. The pieces were made in 1972 by The Stieff Company, Baltimore, Maryland. They are in very good to excellent condition, showing only surface marks consistent with age and handling. The shapes are true; no dents, pitting, or corrosion (see end of this section for Explanation of Terms*). Details: Dimensions: Open Salt height 1 1/2", diameter 2 3/4", capacity 2 oz. Spoon length 2 7/8" Markings: Open Salt marked Stieff Pewter, CWR (Colonial Williamsburg Restoration Stamp), CW 98-14. Spoon marked Stieff Pewter, CWR, CW 90. About the Company: The Stieff Company was founded in 1892 by Charles C. Stieff. In 1939 the company received the appointment to make sterling hollowware and flatware reproductions for the Williamsburg Restoration. The first production of pewter was in 1951. The company merged with the Kirk Corporation in 1979 to form the Kirk Stieff Company, where processes and molds were later shared.  Historical Note: The restoration of Williamsburg was possible because of the vision of Reverend Dr. W. A. R. Goodwin, and the commitment and funding of John D. Rockefeller Jr. What began as a few buildings in 1926, today encompasses an historic area of 301 acres, more than 80 original structures, and hundreds of additional buildings. All of which have been restored, reconstructed, and historically furnished, preserving about 85% of the original 18th century capital.  _________________________ *Explanation of Terms Describing Item Condition Excellent: Looks almost new; has no noticeable signs of use or wear.
