Description
A Roman furniture ornament in the shape of a lion's head with a round handle in the mouth. Similar lion masks have been found on furniture, caskets and lead sarcophagi. Door handles exist in the same shape but are usually more massive. The shape is that of a roaring lion, reinforced by strong eyebrows over large eyes which captivate the attention of the spectator, and expresses the probable apotropaic function of the piece. The incised radiating mane and the bed of dots adds realism and decorative value. Visible lacks, encrustations. Material : Bronze, encrustations Dimensions : H. : 13,2 cm Provenance : French private collection Period : I-III c. A.D. Sold with certificate of authenticity
