Pre-Columbian Diquis Gold Figure, Costa Rica Click on the text links to view enlargements: 1-2-3-4 A striking and finely-crafted gold figural piece from the Diquis culture of Pre-Columbian Costa Rica, ca. 500 A.D.-600 A.D. This piece measures approximately 1.75" tall and feels quite heavy in the hand. The subject is likely a deity or supernatural being. The captivating face is masterfully formed and exhibits a sublime, powerful expression. There are three "legs", two of which terminate in gold loops (one with some loss), with the central terminating in a gold cube. Comes with custom display stand. PLEASE NOTE: due to the complexities of international Customs restrictions regarding the import/export of items made of precious metals (gold, etc.), this item can only be sold/shipped within the U.S. We apologize for any inconvenience to our international customers and appreciate your understanding. Condition: The head was bent/broken off at the neck in ancient times, perhaps simulating/symbolizing decapitation, possibly as the result of ritually "killing" the item. The head has been re-secured in modern times (rather crudely) with what appears to be hot glue from a glue gun (best visible from the back view). Professional conservation/restoration to better repair the head would be an option, however, the piece displays very well as-is. In addition, a small portion of one "foot" loop and the lower right ear loop is missing. I have not tested the gold content of this piece and do not know what karat it might be, though the quality of the finish gives the appearance of being higher karat gold.
