It measures 7” in diameter on the plain side and 8 1/2” to the head of the frog and is 2 “ in height. It is a very early piece from the Coast of Peru and inspired the Moche and Chimu artists centuries later to create their magical works. The frog is often associated with water and fertility so this is most likely a ceremonial piece to placate the gods of rain. It is greyware terracotta having a well molded head extending from the bowl wall and low relief arms and legs on the vessel body. There has been one tiny repair to the rim and minor restoration to the rear of one leg. It is a scarce and rarely seen piece and comes from the private collection of ex. Jean-Eugene Lions of Geneva Switzerland.
