Description
The first of a series of groups related to the Civil War presenting the uniform soldier, the "Picket Guard" was the result of the outbreak of the rebellion just two months earlier. The timeliness of the topic was an important factor in its success and the theme was followed through the next several groups he modeled. On July 14, 1861, Mr. Rogers wrote with excitement: "I have got the Picket Guard cast and it looks bully." His enthusiasm was well founded and "Picket Guard" proved to be his first major success. The small group depicts an officer of the Union Zouaves, a soldier at each side, walking intently toward the picket line. At this moment, while on duty they have suddenly discovered the enemy's approach. The officer is restraining one of the soldiers from firing; the other is shading his eyes looking intently at the source of danger.(from John Rogers' Group of Statuary by Paul & Meta Bleier). The group is in excellent condition. There was a thin coat of laquer applied many years ago. There was some rubbing of the rifle butt on the rear of the group. Buyer pays S/H/I. Checks, money order and Paypal accepted. Any questions, please email.
