Description
INTERESTING PEWTER QUART MUG – FAKED MARKS TO SELL????   Here is an antique pewter quart in a style made from 1850 for a good long period probably well into the 1900s. The body has a slightly streaky look so it could have been treated with acid to make it look older than what it is. The neck has numerous markings including – Crowned GR Crowned W(R?) VR at least twice and Crown over perhaps GIV and two others. So whoever did this went to a lot of trouble to make a buyer believe it was made in the time of perhaps G IV and gave long service. What nonsense - some schemer has been trying to cheat a buyer! It has a ticket stuck to the bottom typical of a famous if deceased international dealer and pewter authority. What a shame that someone might have fooled him with such a piece! As such this is maybe a really good example of what went on in the 1920s-1950s (or later perhaps). It shows what to look for from the acid aging (a sponged sort of effect rather than the usual split very dark top and less darkened base usual on the genuine pieces) to the fairly evenly spaced marks of various (too many?) monarchs. Every collector should have one? How old is this actually – not a clue ……… How do I know the above? – well I have had a nice set before - and had the benefit of an expert point these matters out to me. Nearly 6 ¼” to the rim and about 776 grams.   UK cheques are also accepted in payment. My eBay shop now has items of pewter, wood, copper and brassware for sale please use the links above on the right or left hand sides below or across from the photos These should enhance any period display at home, in a pub, restaurant, hotel or heritage building.   For those who might begin to develop an interest in ANTIQUE BRITISH PEWTER might I suggest you access my information only web site at www.pewterbank.com   I really DO welcome additional articles, advice, and suggestions for new and recent collectors and will add these to my website from time to time. (It does take time and is better when there are a few together to add…)   POSTAGE (OR SHIPPING) PRICES My individual postage charges include about £2 so that I can pay for help to send all orders quickly and recover a little on bought in packaging. Consolidated shipments of several items to one UK business address are less expensive – please ask. Overseas I am pleased to quote a shipping cost for Royal Mail Airmail/Airsure Services, I guide buyers to look at www.royalmail.com and follow the pricing route to estimate costs. For my pewter I find that I add 50-70% - depending on size and on how the piece needs protecting - to the weight of the piece for packaging materials (and I usually quote the piece weight in the eBay copy so I can calculate shipping more easily) So if it weighs 500gms I look at the 750 gm rate or next band 1 kilo rate depending on what needs good protection. This is mentioned here so you can try it for yourself - but I am always pleased to quote - a firm price. And I am happy to work with anyone who can do it better at their own risk, through their own contacts.
