Description
Holy Land Roman Period Bronze Fist (Fica) Pendants Two cast bronze Roman Fica pendants of forearm and fist. On one pendant the top ring is missing, the other ring has a partial ring that has worn through from use. Both pieces approximately 2 ½ cm long. Two fascinating and documented original Roman period pieces from Megiddo. In ancient times Megiddo was an important city state. It is also known alternatively as Tel Megiddo (Hebrew) and Tell al-Mutesellim (Arabic). Megiddo is a tel (hill or mound) made of 26 layers of the ruins of ancient cities in a strategic location at the head of a pass through the Carmel Ridge, which overlooks the Valley of Jezreel from the west. The city is mentioned in the New Testament as the site for Armageddon. These pieces are from the old Tucson estate of Mr. Eugene B. Thomas. Mr. Thomas was an amateur archeologist and engineer who worked in Israel in the 1950s and was given written permission to collect artifacts from work sites so that experts could be shown materials from the area. He was often allowed to keep artifact for his collection. He was also very detailed in his documentation, labeling all items with the name of recovery location. In addition to myself this piece has been verified by Fred Gumbart. Mr. Fred Gumbart is the owner/appraiser of Arizona Galleries (520-322-6388). He specializes (by appointment only) in consultations, and he is an official, licensed, and accredited appraiser of Fine Period Antiques, Fine Art, Ethnographic Art, Pre-Columbian Art and the Asian Arts. Fred is a lifelong, serious collector of art, antiques and artifacts, and has been seen on the PBS History Detectives TV Show concerning antiques and artifacts.
