Description
A Fabulous Piece of Original Hollywood History “The Original Sign” farther back than vintage 1923 In 1923 Developer Sydney H. Woodruff built the Hollywood sign as a sales gimmick to draw people to his European styled hillside homes in the Hollywood Hills. The Original sign said “Hollywoodland” which is still the name of the community. In 1923 the sign was lit with light bulbs. There was a constant caretaker there who had a sling seat to raise himself up and down to change the bulbs. During WWII the sign went into Disrepair. The H and the land fell down as did some of the other letters. The sign was never lit with bulbs again. This piece of the sign was brought down the hill by my husband’s son in 1972. It was 20 feet long. We had it cut into 3 pieces. One has been sold and one we are keeping and one is Up for auction. One piece measures 4’ 8” with 6 working lights. One piece is 5’ 3” with 7 working lights. The surface with the lights measures 5” and it is about 2” deep. The winning bidder may pick the size of the sign. All parts are original including the Rusty tin patina. They have original copper screws, all original working sockets. They have been rewired and added a switch and cord to be in working condition. There are wooden caps on each end. And have been waxed to keep the patina. They can be hung horizontally or vertically. Look great on the mantel. If you look close at the Fallen H picture you can identify the long piece that is attached to the radius of the letters. The flat portion of the sign had holes in it for high winds. Take a look at the picture taken In 1948. Enjoy and Happy Bidding! Will ship international! Buyer pays shipping!
