Description
"Classical Sculpture Formerly from Marbury Hall" The catalog to an auction held in London by Christie’s on July 10, 1987. Fourteen classical sculptures originally acquired by James Smith Barry in Rome in 1776, during his ‘Grand Tour’. This was a particularly good time from collecting classical antiquities, as many of the large Italian collections of antiquities, originally formed in the Renaissance, were being dispersed and much fine material was available on the market. As the introduction notes, this auction not only represents a superlative selection of antique Classical sculpture, but also a “collective legacy of the days of the Grand Tour and the enduring influence of Renaissance Italy on the life and culture of England”. Hardcover. 8”x10”, 43 pages, 14 lots. There are full-page color plates of 13 of the 14 lots, plus numerous black & white illustrations; prices realised sheet stapled to title page. Light wear, corner tips bumped, but overall in fine, clean condition. QUESTIONS about this item? If you have any questions regarding this item, please let us know and we will respond promptly.
