These were used to verify the landlords measures and not to drink out of. Clearly marked to the bottom by Gaskell & Chambers of London who were making these certainly up to 1930 and using as in this case the molds of James Yates of Birmingham which could have been first used in the early 1800s. The X over a Y in a triangle over a double cross in the mug base indicates this - though the meaning of the double cross appears to have been lost in the clouds of time. Perhaps an ebayer will point to where the information is - of exactly what these inside base marks mean?   This stands about 3 ½” and weighs perhaps 344 grams.
