Description
Untitled Document Apulian Red-Figured Bell Krater (4th. Century BC) R! depicting winged Eros / Woman of Fashion Culture: Greek (Apulian) Period: late 4th Century BC Material: Glazed/Painted Redware Condition: Intact with one larger chip and few tiny injuries. Diameter: 185mm / 7.28 inches Height: 180mm / 7.08 inches At your attention a beautifull apulian red-figured and black glazed bell krater (wine mixing vessel). This rather small, but very elegand vessel is decorated with the classical motive, widely known as "lady of fashion". Her profiled head is adorned with a pearl earrings and she wears a pearl necklace. The second motive shown here is a naked and winged eros, holding a wreath (or musical instrument) with his left and a box filled with obviously cosmetic articles (perfume flask, and a second unidentified object). Each side is framed by the typical for this period floral patterns and palmettes. The empty spaces were filled with rosettes, three of which are hanging down from the box, an oak leaf (upper left side of the Eros depiction) and square objects, probably depicting windows. Intact, with only few chips and glaze injuries and no restaurations at all. Greek Apulian, late 4th Century BC. Very rare and gorgeus! A krater (in Greek: κρατήρ, kratēr, from the verb κεράννυμι, keránnymi, meaning "I mix") was a vase used to mix wine and water. Red-figure pottery (Greek, ερυθρόμορφα, erythromorpha) is a style of archaic Greek pottery, later adopted in southern Italy. In the red-figure technique, the background is filled in with black paint and only the figures' details are painted, allowing the unpainted portions of the figures to take on the reddish tone of the Athenian clay after it is burned in the presence of oxygen. Red-figure pottery is considered to mark the apex of Greek pottery, and most vases or cups famous today for their skillful painting are in the red-figure style. All items listed are guaranteed to be authentic ancient originals and as described. No returns without cogent reason. All returns must be pre-authorized.
