Description
This is an unusual antique set of Ancient Roman nails and one coin, with an explanatory plaques to their origins. The writing under the coin (which is in remarkably good condition, writing and head still raised) says Rome Mint 64-68 AD Sistertius Nero The writing on the paper says "Concerning the Hoard of Ancient Roman Nails at the Fortress of Inchtuthill. The fortress covered some 50 acres, consisted of 65 buildings and housed 5500 men, contained a high stone wall, the Roman Legion frontier base in Caputh Parish, Scotland, was virtually a small town in itself understood to have been occupied by the XX Legion. Being self-sufficient, the workshop for example, could smelt and fabricate iron and when the fortress was evacuated in AD87, all of their nails were deeply buried, denying them to the Caledonians, where they remained undisturbed until disinterred in 1959 by Professor Ian Richmond of Oxford Univeristy. They were moved for classification to Messrs. Colvilles Ltd, thereafter many hundreds being distributed to museums or sold to assist the funding of the dig. On completion, the balance passed to British Steel, and (the Crown having waived all rights) in due course what was left became the property of William Telfer Esq. of Glasgow, who has taken great pride in their safekeeping since. The nails exhibited at the 12th international Congress of Roman Frontier Studies in 1979 were there by his gift." It is mounted in a raised frame with glass, dark wood possibly mahogany, glass intact, very good condition apart from a chip out of bottom left corner (see photo). Measures approx 17 1/4" x 18 1/4" outer edge, 12 1/4" x 13 1/4" inner frame, 3" deep. Nails range in size from approx 2" to 9", mounting board of hessian This is a heavy item, hence postage costs.
