Staufer (some guitar labels say Staufer, others Stauffer) was the most famous builder of the Viennese school of guitar, whose work summarizes that school of building.  He is famous still today because of the many innovations in guitar design he introduced. Christian F. Martin was one of his students before he went to America in 1833 and founded there his own company to pursue the guitar-making tradition he had learned from Staufer. This guitar is the most well-known Legnani model based on collaboration with the famous Italian guitarist Luigi Legnani.  The instrument has the Staufer label with red wax seal that reads in German: "Nach dem Modell des Luigi Legnani von Johann Georg Staufer in Wien". There is no date but Staufer built this Legnani model around 1820. Cause the guitar has a smaller size and a scale length of just 22“ (56 cm), it must be a terz guitar tuned in G. The soundboard are made of spruce, back and sides probably of maple. It is tuned with wooden pegs. Fretboard, pegs, brigde and pins are made of ebony. The guitar has been restored sometime and is in a very good looking and well playable condition, especially for its age. Some hair cracks on the top and on the sides are repaired.  The neck is straight and the guitar has a good (low) action. Its sound is really great. The length of the guitar is 33" (84 cm), the body is 15.5" (40 cm) long and 11.5" (29 cm) wide. Have a look at the pictures and contact me if you have questions.
