Antique Early Colonial Large Church Vessel Pot Ea. 1500's Look at this ! Don't miss it! This is a very rare piece of history. It is a large ceramic vessel which was used in an Early colonial church in a Spanish settlement in Central America It was made to fit the needs of the newly Christianized local population There are decorations all over in relief combining both native and Christian motifs - the lizards and serpents on the outside are purely Mayan, while the 2 crosses on the inside are definitely a Spanish influence The pot itself was made totally in the Mayan tradition without using a pottery wheel, but the form of the base is definitely Spanish (Mayan pieces usually have 3 feet, not a full circle base). Both of the handles are also in a typical Mayan shape. All that makes us believe it was made from a local potter to fit the new realities It was found in the church of a Spanish fort in Central America back in the 1970s when we purchased it, and it still bears some of the genuine soil The size is large and probably it was used as a baptizing bowl Measurements: Approx. 10" tall, 15" handle to handle Condition: You could not hope to find a better one for the period - It is just PRISTINE!!!
