Offered here is an Antique French Book titled “Antiquités D’Herculanum” or Antiquities of Herculanum; a town in Italy which was destroyed along with Pompeii by Mt Vesuvious’ eruption in 79ce. The excavation of the area began in 1738 and influenced Neoclassical styles of the late 1700s. This book lavishly documents findings from the excavation with detailed plate engravings. Chapters include Bronzes, Lamps & Candleabras, with indexes at end of each section. Large quarto sized book is compromised of plates with brief titles and a map of Mt Vesuvious and surrounding affected area in back of book. There is no other text other than title pages between each section. An amazing resource for the collector/enthusiast/designer! Published in Paris, France by P. Piranesi, Fréres; engravings by Th. Piroli. Sections are bound with hardcover boards covered with florentine marble paper. Item is in excellent condition with front, back board and first 7 pages detached. Loose pages throughout; all pages present. Spine is not present. Overall wear/foxing to pages and cover. Former owner’s name is written on first title page. Measures approximately 11.75" long, 8.5" wide and 1.5" high. Over 300 unnumbered plates with over 100 engraved plates. Shipping via media mail will be $7 within the United States.
