Current Lot Chinese export porcelain armorial dinner set Chinese export porcelain armorial part dinner service late 18th century Each painted with a blue diapered rim centering a garland of polychrome enameled flowers and ribbon holding a lozenge with cipher DHC surrounded by roses and gilt ribbons, comprising: Two oval soup tureens, one covered Twelve dinner plates One sauceboat Five large serving platters, in sizes Six leaf form dishes Three pierced fruit baskets with stands Six pots de creme Two serving bowls, in sizes Two small bowls Five small serving platters, in sizes Two sauce tureens Three miscellaneous covers. Tallest H: 10 in. PROVENANCE: David Hayfield Conyngham (1750-1834), Philadephia, Pennsylvania; merchant and Patriot Thence by descent in the family to the present owners. NOTE: The Conyngham family emigrated to Philadelphia from Ireland in 1740. David Hayfield Conyngham was born in Philadephia, the eldest son of Redmond Conyngham, founder of the prominent shipping house of Conyngham & Nesbit. He was baptized at Christ Church and is buried in the church yard. He was a student in the Philadelphia Academy from 1757-1769 and elected as a trustee of the Academy and College of Philadelphia (the origins of the University of Pennsylvania) in 1790 where he served until his resignation in 1813. During the Revolution, Conyngham was active in skirmishes on land as a soldier and on sea as a successful Privateer for the American cause. He was a member of the First Troop of Philadelphia City Calvary .
