Atchison was a well known painter and sculptor in the Washington, D.C. area. He was commissioned to make inaugural medals for President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Vice President John Nance Garner. Many of the pieces he created are still in Washington, D.C. today, such as his bust of Henry T. Rainey, Speaker of the House, which stands in the U.S. Capital Building.
