Material: Iron Condition: Choice Size: 288 mm - 14,33 inches Est. $350-400   Description: A wonderfully preserved Rondel dagger, dating to the 13th.-14th. cent. German type. The rondels are equal in size and both oval shape. The lower rondel is oval. A straight single edged blade. We will date this dagger to c, 1350. The dagger measure 288 mm. in length. The handle would have been made of wood or bone and would have tappered towards the rondels. The wooden hilts from this period daggers are nearly always missing and sometimes reconstructed. Provenance: Old German collection. Condition: Choice! Professionally cleaned and fixated. Intact blade and handle with some corrosion, but relatively good metal as seen in the pictures. Est. $350-400. About Rondel daggers: The name "rondel" is derived from the disc-shaped guards of the dagger. Even though this name is modern and lacks any historical roots it has become popular and widely accepted. These daggers were in general use from the mid-14th until the mid-16th century but they may have first appeared around the year 1300. Rondel daggers, much like the other types in use during the period, were worn suspended on the right side of the wearers' belts or slung on the front of the belt. They appear to have been used in Central and Western Europe, Scandinavia, and Spain, as well as in England.
