Description
These whimsical characters were purchased in 1970, by me, in a charming shop across from the Louvre in Paris. About 9” high, the NIGHT GUARD has been handmade from pewter and very fine mesh (the arms, the veil and the “skirt”). He carries his lantern, a wicked looking sword and a delicate bunch of five individual keys. His belt , the strap over his shoulder and the visor on his helmet, are each separate pieces. He seems (with his circular hole for a mouth) to be calling out “Ten o’clock and all’s well”. The FALLEN SOLDIER is the same size and made from the same materials, in the same fashion. His bulbous nose and splayed feet make him slightly comical; you’ll smile each time you look at him, in spite of the arrow in his abdomen. His belt, shoulder strap, sword and shield are each separate pieces, as is the arrow. The sculptures are a combination of fine, detailed work and the slightly primitive touches that show the hand of the artist, Michel Laude. Each figure is signed by the artist on the back strap. They are in excellent condition, having been lovingly cared for by me, the original owner. This pair will make a great conversation piece on your desk, bar, chest, sideboard or display cabinet. Price is for the set of 2 sculptures.
